Before updating a Wi-Fi driver, prepare an offline recovery path

Explore the guide library · Windows connection help

Identify the adapter and save a supported driver package before changing the software that provides your connection.

Prepare before replacing a driver: Exact adapter identity; Supported package saved; Alternative connection
Do not remove the only working network driver without a way to reinstall it.

A driver update can fix a wireless problem, but a failed installation can also leave the laptop without its usual internet connection. Prepare the correct package and a recovery route before uninstalling anything.

Identify the hardware accurately

Record the laptop model, wireless-adapter model, Windows version and installed driver version. Use the computer manufacturer’s support guidance first when it supplies a customized or validated driver. An adapter brand alone is not enough to choose the package.

Use a trusted download source

Obtain the supported driver from the system manufacturer or the adapter vendor’s official support page. Intel provides current download guidance and recommends ordinary troubleshooting before a clean installation. Avoid generic driver-download sites that bundle unrelated software.

Save the recovery materials locally

  • The correct installer for the intended operating system.
  • The relevant installation instructions.
  • A record of the previous working version.
  • A permitted alternative connection, such as a compatible Ethernet adapter.

Check that the installer is actually saved and accessible without the home Wi-Fi. A bookmark to the download page is not an offline recovery package.

Choose an appropriate maintenance period

Finish active calls and transfers, connect the laptop to suitable power and follow the documented installer process. On a work-managed device, use the organization’s update channel or involve its administrator.

Test the original issue

After installation and any required restart, verify the driver version and repeat the task that previously failed. Include sleep recovery or a particular band if that was the reason for updating.

If the problem worsens, use a supported rollback or reinstall procedure and retain the error details. Do not cycle through random packages simply because their version numbers are larger. A successful update is a supported driver that improves the intended behavior while preserving reliable access to the networks you use.

What if the Wi-Fi adapter is missing from Device Manager?

If Windows does not show the wireless adapter, investigate the laptop's hardware and driver state before changing router settings. A router can broadcast normally while a particular computer has no usable wireless interface. Open Device Manager and inspect the network-adapter category. Note any warning, unknown device or disabled entry. Record the exact status message if one is available. Microsoft distinguishes an adapter that Windows does not detect from a network that merely fails to connect.

Should I forget one Wi-Fi network or reset Windows networking?

Forgetting a Wi-Fi network and resetting Windows networking are not interchangeable. The first removes a saved connection profile; the second is a broader recovery action that can affect adapters and related software. Choose the scope from the symptom. If one network's password or security configuration changed, a fresh profile can replace stale connection details. Confirm that you can recreate the connection first. Enterprise Wi-Fi may depend on certificates or policies that require administrator help.

What should I check before sharing Wi-Fi through a Windows QR code?

Supported Windows versions can display saved Wi-Fi connection details with a QR code for another device to scan. This is convenient, but the code grants access just as typing the password would. Verify the network and recipient before displaying it. If the router provides a guest network intended for visitors, share that connection rather than the household's main credentials. Confirm its name in Windows. A laptop may remember several similarly named networks from previous homes or workplaces.
