Confirm the approved VPN profile, then investigate the specific resource without weakening company security controls.

The Connected label in a VPN client confirms a connection state, not universal access to every workplace resource. An application can still fail because of its name, route, service availability or account permissions. Keep those stages separate while gathering evidence.
Confirm the intended profile
Check that the active VPN is the one your organization provides for this task. Microsoft advises obtaining workplace VPN settings or software from the organization. A personal privacy VPN is not a substitute for an approved connection to an internal resource.
Use the exact resource name
Open the address supplied by your administrator or a known bookmark. Internal short names and full hostnames may behave differently. Do not replace the hostname with a guessed IP address merely to avoid a certificate or sign-in error.
Describe which stage fails
- A name-resolution error suggests checking the intended DNS path.
- A connection timeout suggests checking reachability and service state.
- A certificate warning needs proper certificate or hostname investigation.
- An access-denied message suggests application authorization.
Collect only approved diagnostics
When your support team requests them, a targeted name lookup or TCP connection test can help. Use only the specified destination and service. Keep internal hostnames, addresses and diagnostic output within the organization’s approved support channel.
Compare useful conditions
Record whether another authorized resource works through the same VPN and whether the failure began after a software or network change. Include the time and the exact message. Avoid testing a coworker’s credentials or disabling endpoint protection.
The administrator may need to examine routing, DNS or access policy beyond your control. Do not create router forwarding rules to make an outbound work VPN appear healthy. Once a correction is applied, verify the original application task and the required security state together. A green VPN icon is helpful context, but the completed authorized workflow is the meaningful success criterion.
